When does a difficulty in swallowing( Dysphagia) have to be treated? - Dr. Harihara Murthy Difficulty in swallowing is something difficult in different individuals. Children in the young age between 2 to 7 or even 10 can have difficulty in swallowing caused by simple adenoid hypertrophy. It impairs the airways , as a result the child breathes and eats form the mouth. A s a result it will reduce eating. So it may be looked as a refusal of feeds rather than ability to breathe when it is eating or swallowing. So that may be one of the reasons why the child is not swallowing. Apart from that and enlargement of the tonsil itself in a young child can cause difficulty in swallowing for the same reasons and as a result the size of the tonsil does matter whether it is causing infections or not causing infections. When there is enlargement of tonsils whether it is grade 3 or grade 4, obviously it means there is difficulty in the child’s breathing and sleeping as well a s swallowing so these are times when you have to meet with the specialist to find out the exact causes and then treat the same. In an adult it is a complete set of reason why it can cause difficulty in swallowing starting with the upper most part of the throat wherein the tonsils can resist to a later age and cause difficulty in swallowing an tonsil in the back of the tongue called as lingual tonsils are also possible causes for difficulty in swallowing. having said that acute causes can be swelling of the epiglottis or in the larynx swelling of the laryngeal tissues due to various reason which can be extremely life threatening if not addressed immediately. Lower down difficulty of swallowing because of lesson or a mass that is growing in the larynx or the lower part of the throat in the hyerpharynx can be a cause for dysphahgia or difficulty in swallowing. The upper end of the oesophagus which can have a simple problem called as sideropenic dysphagia causing severe anaemia especially in India is a web formation of the tissues there causing difficulty in swallowing. Apart from all this there can be growths in the oesophagus causing difficulty in swallowing.
