The 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 was principally events that occurred in China and elsewhere on and leading up to 4 June 2019 – to commemorate the Chinese Communist Party's crackdown on the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 in which hundreds of people were killed. This year is of greater significance because of the centenary of a student uprising on 4 May 1919. Many aspects of civil society, from to university students lobbying for workers’ rights are facing increasingly draconian oppression. The state's job of putting down dissent is made easier and more complete due to the increasingly widespread surveillance ranging from use of facial recognition technology, to cameras, to real ID registration, monitoring social media use, and sanctions for behaviour not acceptable to the regime.
