What employees want from employers? Trust me, YOU can do these!

What employees want from employers? Trust me, YOU can do these! What staff want from their manager and leader.

So, tell me what you want what you really really want... what? Am I dating myself? (Pic of spice girls)

In this video we get into 8 things employees want from their managers and leaders. And here’s the thing... it’s not a lot

If you’re new here and want to learn how to go from manager to leader, then hit the subscribe button and reinforce the notification bell.

So, what do employees want? Here’s what a “basic manager” would say... you’re getting paid.. you’ve got dental what do you think you’re entitled to?

Now cause you’re watching me now, I know this isn’t how you think but let’s deep dive into what employees are looking for shall we?

I’ll start off with my personal #1) Acknowledgement. - regardless of title, you are no better than anyone working for you. It takes 0 effort to be decent and say hello, good morning, hey, or whatever. Remember, without employees you become unemployed. Plus, you are responsible for setting to tone of the culture you manage!

2. Empathy. They want you to understand them. Or at least try. They don’t need you giving out disciplines because they’ve been late the last three days... they want you to reach out and understand why they may be late. Perhaps their spouse has lost their job and your employee has picked up an extra job. Or perhaps the have an ill parent. These are not your problems BUT it’s your responsibility as a leader to do whatever you can to try to help. And of course, try to empathize!
3. Relationship. No, they’re not looking for dinner and a movie.... well.. typically they’re not... they are looking to know you. Whether they admit it or not they want to know a little about you and you to know a little about them. Now this doesn’t happen by you calling them into your office and almost interviewing them... it happens at the water cooler or the coffee station. It’s not something that can be forced but it is something you can intend. Oh, and it can’t be rushed. So the earlier you start the better.
4. Appreciation. I’ve made an entire video about the power of “thank you” which I’ll link in the card above but it’s simple. Say thank you. Show appreciation for a job well done, for initiative taken or for a quick turn around for a project. Just be genuine and say thanks!
5. Respect. People want to feel respected. This goes back to the beginning of the video, one way to show respect is by greeting someone. Regardless of title, everyone should be worthy of your respect. And if they aren’t I would question why they would be working for you?
6. True to your word. People want to know that when you say something they can count on it being true. They want you to be truthful in the manor that if you say something will happen then you will make that happen. If something is only a possibility then you say that as well. Wether the results are favorable or not people want to be able to count on you and trust that you back what you say. Don’t flip flop on them.
7. They want you to listen! People want a chance to speak with the boss! They want to know that they’ve been heard and feel that they’ve contributed. Here’s the thing, as a leader, especially one who’s subscribed to this channel, you know that only a fool thinks they have the only right answer. True leaders take the opportunity to hear what is happening on the front lines by those who are actually there. And in doing so, not only do you get a better insight but you also get a better work culture!
8. Constructive criticism. Most Employees want to know where they stand in the eyes of the company. They want to know what they are doing right and what they could improve on. To do not want to be belittled in front of coworkers! Leaders that get the most out of their employees know this and will routinely meet with staff members individually to share their perspective on the work being done. Constructive criticism is a great way to help people grow which will help the company grow.
