It’s only natural that these heads of state move around in their countries and the world at large. Will they have to put up with the hustle and bustle of public transport? Of course not. They have their own (or rather state-owned) planes to carry them around.
But not all of these planes are created equal. Some cost the taxpayers big bucks to acquire. And in today’s video, we’ll be looking at ten of these expensive birds.
#10 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, Mexico
Former Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto drew serious criticism when he ordered the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. But, that was just about it. Guess you can get away with extravagance as long you’re the head of state.
This metallic bird cost a whopping $600 million, a figure that makes it rank high up in the world of expensive presidential aircraft. So what does it bring to the table at that hefty price tag?
First is space. At capacity, it carries a total of 250 passengers. This is more than enough for the president to tag along enough staff for various functions both inside the country and when he ventures across borders. Though we will be curious to see why anyone, let alone a president, will need to be accompanied by that many people.
Talking of across borders, the Dreamliner can go as far as 10,000 miles without having to be refueled. This makes it quite an asset for when the president needs to take a long trip to discuss important economic matters. And then there is the maximum speed of up to 1,000 miles per hour which further makes that long trip at least bearable.
Inside, the president has access to a well-furnished main lounge comprising of a sofa and several desks. In addition to this, there is a master bedroom with a top of the range bed, cabinets, and, of course, chairs. He can also be fresh by the time the plane lands by having a moment in one of the five-star bathrooms.
Talk about luxury in the air.
#9 Boeing 767-200ER, Zimbabwe
Former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe also got called out when he procured a costly presidential plane in arguably one of the most beaten-down economies in the world. But if you knew the now-departed former president, you know this was the type of stuff he cared less about – it was either his way or the highway.
At a cost of $400 million, the Boeing 767-200ER un-tucked its landing gear in Zimbabwean skies for the president to use. It's well-equipped with all the facilities you'll find in a 5-star establishment – a sleek interior finishing, luxurious beds, and one-of-a-kind boardrooms. And just so the VIP ambiance stays on, Robert Mugabe had the plane's stairs covered with a red carpet.
The Boeing 767-200ER isn’t as huge as the Mexican Dreamliner, and can only accommodate 40 people.
This plane held a special place in Mugabe's heart, something he made known by having the airport cleared anytime his expensive bird was approaching. What a way to rub the unjustifiable purchase in people's faces.
