Spirituality and Virtues - Giving: Thinking About It

Getting gifts is always fun. But even more fun is when we give a gift, especially if we want to give. It is also the secret to our happiness. It makes us feel so much better, not only in that moment, but as a person. Research proves that those who give freely, abundantly and happily have much better self-esteem. The tricky part is, however, that the whole point of giving is that it is not about me, but you.

Generosity, charity, and giving is not about our possessions, but about the awareness of what is needed in that moment. Giving can actually be the simplest act of giving someone a smile, a hug, some affection, some encouragement or a listening ear. It could also be answering a question or helping someone gain an interest. Additionally, you could give them knowledge, an opportunity to express their talent or even a job so that they find something that they can do and is worthwhile and enjoyable.
Giving has to be for the love of giving, to open our heart and stretch it to allow more people in. Also, the more the object or time (or whatever it is I am giving) means to me, the better the act of giving. So it’s not just recycling clothes or giving away leftovers so that someone in need can have them. Such surely are purposeful and helpful acts, of course! But the deeper we go within ourselves to give, the better that actual act it is. The glory and beauty of giving is that when we give, we find out both how much we have, and how much we have TO BE ABLE TO give.
