A family member has said that the Uganda Human Rights Commission chairperson, Med Kaggwa had some illness and was driving to hospital for medication when he fell unconscious.
The UHRC chairperson was rushed to Case hospital on Wednesday morning after being found unconscious in his vehicle and was later pronounced dead.
According to a family member this website found at the hospital, Kaggwa who lives in Mulago had some illness and decided to drive himself to hospital for medication but didn’t make it.
“He didn’t have his bodyguard and driver as he chose to drive himself for medication,” a family member who asked to remain anonymous said.
Another source who was among the medics who received Kaggwa at Case said it is expected the UHRC boss had spent over 20 minutes inside the vehicle whose windows were all closed.
According to Dr.Patrick Kaliika, the Medical Director at Case Hospital, the UHRC chairperson was brought to the hospital at 7:55 am by a medical doctor from Mulago who found him collapsed in his car near Mulago roundabout.
“The car allegedly stopped suddenly and knocked the car in front of it. The car was found locked and hence broken into by bystanders,” Kaliika said.
He said the doctor who was driving with his wife and came to the rescue found Kaggwa convulsing and unresponsive.
“The doctor started a one-man cardiopulmonary resuscitation with mouth to mouth respiration and cardiac compressions,” the Medical Director at Case Hospital said.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.
The medical personnel at Case Hospital said after being brought to their hospital where he was put under their Intensive Care Unit, Med Kaggwa had no signs of life.
“The ICU team took over and started advanced life support including CPR, intubation, adrenaline *4 in 1 mg series and defibrillation 360J *3 in series. This continued for one hour with no return of vital signs of life. He was declared dead at 9am.”
The hospital however said the family had told them that Kaggwa was a known hypertensive on treatment.
