Ecological succession is the process of how communities develop and mature as species replace one another in time.
The process operates through stages (sere) and depending on the type of habitat there are different seral stages that succession can go through.

Also there are debates about the factors that affect succession process and about whether climax communities are the product of climate alone or other factors too.
