Spirituality and Virtues - Being ATTENTIVE and PATIENT: Thinking About It

Spirituality and Virtues - Being ATTENTIVE and PATIENT: Thinking About It Our average attention span, lasting about 20-25 minutes nowadays, has continued to decline, and reduced to half of what it used to be over the past 30 years. While a factor of this could be technology, Swami Swaroopananda beautifully explains how the reduction is caused by loss of patience.
The 80s and 90s came with their fair share of fast services, be it food or shipping or communication, but in today’s world, the speed of us getting things is instant. We send a Whatsapp and expect a reply straight away. We send an email and expect it to be answered by day’s end. When we are looking at something, our attention gets diverted to something that could possibly be more interesting. For instance, children simultaneously watch both the television/laptop and their phones. So what’s happened is we’ve lost the patience to see the result of certain things, causing our attention span to be reduced.
Consequently, we’re not able to enjoy things as much. When trying to maintain mindfulness, like by sitting and just enjoying a flower or just enjoying the breeze, we have to be completely present. However, nowadays, we cannot do it for more than a few seconds. We want what’s next. But there is just the beauty of what is. So patience is when we continue to maintain that attention span and we continue to see the beauty, deeper still.
This is far more important for the relationships in our lives. When we’re with a person, and if we are constantly looking for newness or freshness, we are not able to see the beauty that’s there. When we’re patient and we let them unfold in front of us, we get to see the depth of who they really are and our relationships become so much more significant and meaningful.
Patience is a quality also explained numerous times by Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Geeta. Let’s try it, today.
