Santiago has seen looting, protests and riots, in which at least 18 people have died, ever since the government announced an increase in transport fares. The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living and police conduct during demonstrations. Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced on Saturday, October 19, the suspension of the transport fare hikes. On the same day, the government called a national emergency and mobilised military on the streets, placing a curfew.
