DAILY DOSE | After winning the semifinal judo match, Israeli victor Sagi Muki's Egyptian opponent would not shake his hand for political reasons. Muki discusses with host Jeff Smith.
Story:
Israeli judoka Sagi Muki won Wednesday the gold medal at Judo World Championship finals in Japan, after beating Belgium contender Matthias Casse. He is the first Israeli to win the Japanese tournament.
Muki reached the final earlier after beating his Egyptian counterpart during the semi-finals.
At the end of an intense battle, Muki approached the Egyptian to shake hands, but the defeated player ignored the gesture, turning around and walking off the mat.
Following the win, Muki has taken top spot in world’s judo rankings and looks certain to participate at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Hebrew-language YNET News outlet reported.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted amid the win “World champion! Great Sagi Muki -- you have brought a lot of honor in pride to all of us.”
This past fall, Muki again took the gold against Belgium's Casse in the final round of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tournament, in a symbolic victory that saw Israel's national anthem played for the first time at a sporting event in the Arab country.
