# Introduction to Hammer Mill.
Hammer mill is a type of crusher which is used for grinding and pulverizing various materials.
Note: Grinding: to break something into very small pieces or into powder by the use of machine or two hard surfaces.
Pulverizing: Means reducing to moderate fine particle
Hammer mill is a mill which is used for:
Crushing or milling agglomerates
or large-sized particles into small sized freely flowing particles.
(note that the free flowing property of powder depends on the speed of mill).

Principle of Hammer Mill.
Hammer mill works on the principle of impaction, in which a speedily moving object is made to hit a stationary substance.
Pulverization or grinding of the substance is the main mechanism.

Construction of Hammer Mill.
Hammer mill is either a horizontal or vertical shaft type.
It consists of hammers made up of hardened or stainless steel.
The hammer that is present in the mill, are of various shapes but the stirrup and bar are the two commonly used shape.
The edges of hammer blades are either flat or sharp (or both) and hence for granulating tablets the bar shaped hammers are preferred.
Hammer and the parts attached to it are bounded by a chamber which consist of removable screen which is made up of perforated metal sheet of varying thickness.

Working of Hammer Mill.
The material which is to crushed is introduced into the hopper and after that the fast rotating hammer convert the material into powder which is then collected beneath the screen.
Note that the resultant powder is coarse to moderately fine.
Though the hammer mill operates at a very high speed due to which heat is generated and hence the thermo-liable materials.

Uses of Hammer Mill.
In pharmaceutical industries the hammer mill is used in the wet or dry granulations.
Hammer mill is used to grind pharmaceutical raw materials, bark, leave and root of herbal plant and also for grinding sugar.

Merits of Hammer Mill.
The merits of hammer mill are listed:
The reduction ration and capacity of hammer mill is high for primary, secondary or tertiary grinding.
Its easy to install, dismantle and clean the hammer mill.
The maintenance cost of hammer mill is less.
Hammer mill can be operated continuously.
As the hammer mill consist closed chamber, it prevent dust from getting mixed with the material being grinded and even explosion hazards are prevented.

Demerits of Hammer Mill.
The demerits of hammer mill are as following:
The hammer mill cannot produce fine powder.
As it produce heat that’s why the low melting sticky or plastic like materials cannot be crushed.
when excess of materials are introduced into the hammer mill, the hammer mill will get chocked and damaged.a
