A new poll shows that President Tsai Ing-wen would win in a two-way presidential race against the KMT’s Han Kuo-yu. In a poll by a DPP-leaning think tank, respondents favored Tsai with 46% of the vote, while Han had 39%. But the think tank says if a third candidate emerged, the election would become very closely fought. If either Terry Gou or Ko Wen-je entered the ring, Tsai’s lead would drastically shrink. Following the KMT and DPP primaries, the Cross-Strait Policy Association has released fresh polling data on the nominees. The poll shows Tsai with 45.9% support and Han with 39%. If Ko entered the race, he would pick up 22.3% of the vote while Tsai’s support would drop to 36% and Han’s to 33.7%. This means that her lead would shrink considerably.Tan Yao-nanCross-Strait Policy AssociationFor these different combinations of official candidates and prospective candidates, the differences between Tsai and Han were in fact very small. The differences all fell within the margin of error. The think tank also weighed the chances of Gou launching an independent bid, perhaps even on the same ticket as Mayor Ko.Fan Shih-pingPolitics professorWill Gou will share ticket with Ko? From a political standpoint, I think it’s not likely. The two joining forces wouldn’t have as great an impact as expected. Both of them are very strong-willed, and they would have a hard time teaming up..The pundit said Gou was more likely to partner with the People First Party than with Ko. If he ended up doing that, he could turn the 2020 election on its head.
