Firefighters in the Italian city of Palermo observed a minute of silence on Monday in tribute to slain police officer Mario Cerciello Rega, who died in Rome on Saturday, after allegedly being stabbed by two teenagers from the United States.

Footage shows firefighters putting the Italian and European Union flags at half-mast while observing a minute of silence.

Cerciello Rega was laid to rest near Naples on Monday, in a funeral held in the same chapel where Rega married his fiancee in June. Officials including Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, Mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi and Italian Minister of Defense Elisabetta Trenta attended the event.

Two US students, Finnegan Lee Elder and Gabriel Christian Natale-Hjorth, were reported to have admitted killing Mario Cerciello Rega on June 26. According to police reports, he was stabbed several times by one of the teenagers while the other was scuffling with the officer's partner.
