But it was the spell-binding moment when she challenged Joe Biden on race and his record of busing that stole the spotlight.
She went on to challenge Mr Biden's stance as he has been criticised for saying that he worked with segregationists earlier in his career to achieve things in the Senate.
Mr Biden had entered the debate as the candidate that most Americans have heard of. He’s the frontrunner and well ahead in the polls.
