The psoas is an interesting muscle and is very "reactive" to what's going on in the low back. It's very rare that a case of low back pain does not result in "protective guarding" of the surrounding muscles, including the psoas which essentially sits in the frontside of the low back. For that reason, this stretch is part of the home program for most of our patients with back pain (along with a self-release with a 4" ball: )
And even if you're not dealing with back pain, if you have to sit at a desk for work each day, this type of stretch can be beneficial for reversing some of the tightnesses that tend to develop and cause various problems over time.
