Italy: 'Rules changing in Europe,' says Salvini as League becomes Italy's biggest party

Italian Interior Minister and League party leader Matteo Salvini said the European parliamentary vote results showed that "the rules are changing in Europe," during a press conference at the League headquarters in Milan early on Monday.

"A new Europe is born. And I say this to those who have sunk the European dream, transforming it into a nightmare, that I am proud that the League participated in this new European Renaissance," Salvini said.

According to voter projections the League became the first party in Italy by winning 33% of the vote, surging from just 6% at the last European vote in 2014 and at least 10 percentage points in front of the Democratic Party.

The League's coalition partners, the 5 Star Movement (M5S), finished third with 19% of the vote. The M5S had gained 32,7 percent of the vote during Italy's last political elections in March 2018.

Despite the League's rise and the M5S's decrease in consensus, Salvini stressed that there would be no "internal reckonings" in the Italian government. "The government allies are friends for me, with which we will go back to work with tomorrow in a serene way," the League leader said. "I count on taking the government contract back in hand tomorrow morning and applying all the topics that have remained pending."

The Italian Interior Minister held a cross during the press conference, at one point kissing it while thanking "who is up there. He or she does not help Matteo Salvini or the League, he or she helps Italy and Europe to rediscover hope, pride, roots, work, security."
