A municipal employee opened fired at his workplace in Virginia Beach. At least 12 were killed and 4 people were injured in the shooting. The gunman was killed in an exchange of fire with police officers. Police chief of Virginia Beach, James Cervera provided more details of the shooting saying that four officers, including two dog handlers, had engaged the suspect in what he described as a "long-term gun battle". Cervera explained that the suspect had been a current employee at the centre, and as such would not have been checked for weapons by security officers at the building.
