Dear Pastor Bob: Is it Biblical for a Church to deny communion to a believer who is not a regular attender of a Church body? Some Churches do this. They say you need to be a member of their Church or have regular association with their Church body in order to qualify for communion. They will often cite 1 Corinthians 11:29 where it talks about taking communion in an unworthy manner - which can lead to us drinking to our judgement. So whether we belong to a local Church body or have a home Church, how do we determine who can partake in the Lord’s Supper, and who cannot? If someone makes a profession of faith, would that be good enough Scripturally to qualify for communion?
1 Corinthians 11:29 (Amplified Bible)
For anyone who eats and drinks [without solemn reverence and heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifice of Christ], eats and drinks a judgment on himself if he does not recognize the body [of Christ].
